Firearms Applicants Information
In order to expedite your request, the following guidelines are provided to assist you in meeting the criteria for the issuance of a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card or a Permit to Purchase a Handgun.

1. Take care in filling out the application. All questions must be answered.

2. Do not use family members as references.

3. Fingerprinting is done through MorphoTrak, a private company in Parsippany. When you drop off your paperwork, you will receive a form that you need to bring with you to MorphoTrak. Please call Detective Chris Gobbi at (973) 543-7827 for an appointment.

Forms must be signed in front of an officer.

4. There are fees that must be collected prior to the processing of the application:

A. A $60.25 cashiers check, money order, or certified bank check, payable

to the Division of State Police, S.B.I. Personal checks and/or cash will not be accepted. This fee covers the cost of processing fingerprint cards. (The New Jersey State Police is no longer accepting money orders from the Peapack-Gladstone Bank). This money is brought with you to MorphoTrak.

B. A personal check, cash, or money order, payable to The Borough of Mendham, to cover the administrative costs associated with the following:

Firearms I. D. Card $5.00

Each Pistol Purchase Permit $2.00

In order to expedite your request, the following guidelines are provided to assist you in purchasing a Permit to purchase a handgun.
1.                    Take care in filling out the application. All questions must be answered.
2.                    Do not use family members as references. Please advise your references that their response to our letter of inquiry is essential to this process.
3.                    Sign and date only, the yellow “Request for Criminal History Record Information,” Form SBI 212A. This form, along with the $18.00 fee will be sent to the State Police for processing. This fee MUST BE in the form of a money order or cashiers check made payable to the Division of State Police, S.B.I. Personal checks and/or cash will not be accepted. The completion of the form will be done for you at police headquarters. (The NJ State Police are no longer accepting money order from the Peapack-Gladstone Bank.)
4.                    Complete Part One of the Consent for Mental Health Records Search. Do not sign or date this form. Someone at headquarters will witness your signature.
5.                    The fee for each Pistol Purchase Permit is $2.00. A personal check written to the Mendham Borough Police Department, or cash, is acceptable.
6.                    You will be contacted when the process is completed, in approximately 4 weeks time.
