Tranquility Garden
Location: On Route 24 between Orchard Street and Hillcrest Avenue
Description:
The Mendham Borough preserved this property in 2010 to utilize as a pocket walk-in park for cyclists, walkers, and citizens among the downtown streetscape. This garden offers passive recreational opportunities while enhancing the visibility and usage of the Borough's designated historic corridor. Within the garden, guests can enjoy buried gravel pathways, brick pathways, planting beds, arbors, and benches. This garden is the perfect place for peaceful reflection and relaxation.
History:
In 2010, Mendham Borough purchased this parcel of land to preserve the traditional English Garden on the site and maintain the street scape. Then in 2013, it was beautified and transformed due to the hard work and dedication of the Boy Scouts. Troop 1 Boy Scout Matt Marino, pursuing his Eagle award, looked at the parcel of land and decided to take on the large project of turning the space into a usable area for residents. He met with borough administrator Ellen Sandman and was delighted to find they shared the same vision for the space. Through multiple meetings with the Borough’s Historical Society, Open Space Committee, Mayor, and Council, the plans were finalized with the Open Space Committee allocating more than $5,000 for project materials. The project included excavation, restoration, and expansion of buried gravel pathways and planting beds; the repair and painting of the existing arbor; the addition of a new brick pathway; and the addition of five new benches. Some 20 cubic yards of dirt and gravel were removed from the site. On Sunday, October 20, 2013, the site was officially opened with the unveiling of a sign identifying the Borough’s new park. More photos of the park's construction and dedication ceremony can be found here.
