ABOUT THE BOROUGH OF MENDHAM
The Borough of Mendham located in Morris County, New Jersey and is 40 miles west of mid-town Manhattan. It is 5.4 miles west of Morristown, the county seat of Morris County and General George Washington's Headquarters from the winter of 1779 to June of 1780 and the Continental Army's campsite, Jocky Hollow. County Route 24 (Morristown to Hackettstown) runs through the center of town and is the Borough's Main St. The route dates back to 1806 and is historically know as the Washington Turnpike. The Borough is known for its picturesque historic charm and many important historic landmarks such as the Phoenix House (c.1805) which serves as the Borough's Municipal Building, Phoenix House Historic Garden, and the Black Horse Inn (c1700's.) The Borough's current population is 4,981 per the 2020 Census.
Historically, the Borough dates back to the pre-revolutionary war era and was settled in the 1720's. It was officially incorporated as a municipal corporation and separated from Mendham Township on May 15, 1906 by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. The reason for separation was to enable establishing a municipal water uitility and gravity-based public water system needed for firefighting in the then small Borough. The distance of the gravity flow of water stretched one mile in four directions from the center of the Borough at the crossroads of Main Street and Hilltop Road.
The governing body of the Borough consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprised of six council members who are all elected at large. The Mayor is elected directly by the voters for a 4 year term and is considered the head of the municipal government. The Borough Council is considered the legislative body of the municipality and confirms the Mayor's appointments.
Mendham is know for its award wining excellent school system. Public school students in grades K-8 attend the Mendham Borough School system (Hilltop Elementary is K-4 and Mountainview Middle School serves grades 5-8). High school students attend West Morris Mendham High School. Mendham Borough is also home to Saint Josephs School and Assumption College for Sisters.
