Loop Trail Grant

Mendham Borough has received a $6,000 matching Smart Growth Planning Grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions. The funds will be used for a loop trail plan which was first conceived in the early 1980’s as a pedestrian and bicycle path around Mendham Borough (see Figure). The loop will be designed to connect the east and west sides of Patriots Path. The trail is currently in the Recreation section of the Borough Master Plan but has not been developed beyond the conceptual level. The purpose of this grant is to further define the loop trail and move it from concept to reality. Using the grant funds, a consultant was hired to study the route to highlight property boundaries, special crossings and problem areas.  Possible links to adjoining trails and schools will be assessed. The consultant will also develop a preliminary cost estimate to construct the trail. A draft report will be prepared, and after public comment, the report will be finalized and posted on the Borough web site.  This exciting project has just begun and a kickoff meeting for this project was held on July 21st. An integral part of this project will be input from residents and other local organizations. Please look for announcements of a public meeting on this project in late fall or early winter.
