Mendham Borough Council and School Board Second Joint Meeting on School Feasibility Study on June 20
Mendham Borough Mayor Neil Henry announced today that the Borough Council will conduct a second joint public meeting with the Mendham Borough School Board at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Garabrant Center, 4 Wilson Street in Mendham.  The purpose is to continue the public dialogue begun on April 4 regarding the School Feasibility Study Report prepared by Ross Haber Associates.
The Haber Report analyzed the effects of a possible de-regionalization of the West Morris Regional High School District.  It explored two potential options: 1) creating a new regional high school district serving just the Mendhams and the Chesters; or 2) regionalizing all public schools (K-12) in the Mendhams and the Chesters.
On June 20, the Borough Council and School Board will also receive additional public input on school options described in the report and confer on Mendham’s preference as to the options.  Borough residents are encouraged to attend.
“This is a continuation of the important public consultative process begun on April 4,” explained Henry, who continued, “At our last meeting, the Borough Council and School Board members expressed a desire for additional time to consider the issue, as well as answer any questions they might have.  Now the Borough Council and School Board are reconvening to discuss the matter further and decide jointly what option best suits Mendham’s educational goals and needs.”
Mayor Henry noted that a public presentation given last year by the study’s author, veteran public educator Ross Haber, remains available for viewing via computer on Mendham TV On Demand by entering http://mendhamtv.org/ and typing in “Haber” in the Search box. “Education Restructuring Study” will pop up and clicking on that will take the viewer to the Feasibility Study Report Presentation from June 29, 2015.
“Mr. Haber’s explanation of the School Feasibility Study report provided a clear and understandable summary of the educational and practical issues involved,” said Henry, adding, “He answered all of the questions posed by members of the public who attended the presentation, as well as discussed the implications of each of the options included in the Report.”
Mayor Henry stated that a key goal for the June 20 meeting will be for the Borough to reach a decision on what to do in response to the Report.
“The School Feasibility Study process has been ongoing for two years,” declared Henry.  “It is now time for elected officials on the Mendham School Board and the Mendham Borough Council to reach a common public decision on how Mendham Borough wants to proceed, so the Borough can move on to other issues.”
Mayor Henry urged Borough residents to attend the June 20, 2016 joint public meeting.
“Public input is crucial to making the right decision for the future of education in Mendham Borough,” remarked Henry. “Organizing public schools to deliver quality education at an affordable price is of interest to every Borough resident,” he added, “and I am hopeful that, as host community for our regional high school, Mendham Borough will continue its leadership role in working with neighboring municipalities on the future direction of our schools.”
