IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MENDHAM BOROUGH RESIDENTS: "Spear Phishing" Fraudulent Emails and Invoices Scam

Currently, NJ municipalities and their residents are being victimized by “Spear Phishing” fraudulent emails. 

The Borough of Mendham has been made aware of a fraudulent “spear phishing” email being sent to residents and property owners regarding a purported “Application Approval Fee” and invoice.

This email is NOT from the Borough of Mendham, the Joint Land Use Board, or the Borough’s Planning and Zoning Office.

The fraudulent email may appear to come from the “Borough of Mendham Joint Land Use Board” and may reference a specific property, Block and Lot, application, or purported approval fee. The email may also contain an invoice and instructions to respond by email or submit payment.

DO NOT RESPOND OR MAKE PAYMENT

Residents and applicants who receive this email should:

  • Do not reply to the email.
  • Do not open or download any attachments.
  • Do not click on links contained in the email.
  • Do not provide personal, banking, credit card, or other financial information.
  • Do not send payment based on instructions contained in the email.
  • If possible, retain the email as evidence and report it to the Borough.

The fraudulent email identified by the Borough was sent from: planning.dept-boroughofmendham.nj@usa.com

This is NOT an official Borough of Mendham email address. Official Borough correspondence should come from an authorized Borough email account.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT AN EMAIL OR INVOICE

Before making any payment or providing information, contact the Borough directly using the official contact information available through the Borough of Mendham website or by contacting the appropriate Borough office.

If you have already responded to the fraudulent email, opened an attachment, clicked on a link, provided financial information, or sent payment, please take appropriate steps to protect your accounts and contact your financial institution immediately.

Please share this notice with other Mendham Borough residents, property owners, and applicants who may receive this fraudulent communication.
